A real need-based aviation lighting
The PARASOL passive radar system ensures the aviation lights to be switched on only when an aircraft or helicopter is approaching the wind farm. Since PARASOL locates aircrafts with pinpoint accuracy, it provides the necessary requirement to distinguish between aircraft in relevant and non-relevant proximity.
According to German law ADLS systems are not required to distinguish between aircrafts in relevant and non-relevant proximity. Their aim is to detect aircrafts at all. A system missing the technical requirements to locate aircrafts in height and distance, causes false alarms during authorised night-flight operations and switches on the night-time lighting of wind farms without cause.
Sensors
By setting up 2 antennas offset in height, an additional height measurement is carried out by interferometry. This ensures reliable distinction between ground vehicles and aircraft (even at low altitude).
These antenna units are positioned at three dislocated locations, either directly on the tower of the wind turbine or on a specially erected mast.
